A few words about each band

Red Ash and the Love Commandos: Not a different kind of cider. They're red and there's a fair bit of (indie) rock in it. Red Ash is full of immortal lines that belong in everyone's book of phrases such "what fucking good times, we had no fucking good times, all we had bad and shit times". Red Ash approach paradise, rock and roll without powder burns.

Joone: Artists formerly known as The Rembrandts, are anything but static , moving on and moving up with new ideas, new talent and most of all new and innovative music.

USN (formally called Udder):How would you describe USN? Organised chaos / chaotic organisation well and truly done.

Phil Lewis: is a 25 year old from South Wales who has always wanted to make good music. From his early years, when there was a tradition for all of his family to gather around the radio on a Sunday evening to listen to the top 40, to the day when he wrote his first song at the age of thirteen, he has been constantly refining his song writing skills and soaking up a dramatically diverse range of influences.

Red Vision Shores: The music draws its influence from the American alternative rock scene. Influences close to the band include Jane's Addiction, Faith No More and Soundgarden. However, it would be misleading to not mention other styles of music when trying to describe Red Vision Shores.

The Exclusive

25 records are back again, this time with a five - band compilation where each band plays for 15 miniuites An original concept but then 25 Records are not your usual label. Red Ash and The Love Commandos open proceedings with 4 tracks of their slanted take on keyboard based pop, then Joone throw in some pure indie pop (and for once that tag describes their male female vocal sound perfectly). USN give us 15 minutes of their Siouxsie and The Banshees sound a like new wave. Then Pete Lewis plays guitar pop but is a bit too MOR for me, and finally Red Vision Shores end with 3 tracks of alt rock. For me, USN stand out the most but for a fiver you just can't go wrong.

Bambi is Dead

Another compilation from 25 Records. The CD is made up of five bands each playing for nearly 15 minutes.

The first band are Red Ash and the Love Commandos. The most original band on the CD by far, they play cute tunes with not so cute words. Vocalist Captain Ash almost speaks instead of singing, cool.

The next band are Joone who are described as ‘indie pop at it’s best’. Sorry but I don’t reckon so. They’re OK, but basically just another bland indie pop band.

Next up are USN and they’re much better. Aggressive up front rock with marvellous sneery vocals from Lettie Winter. The sings are maybe a little too similar to each other though?

A bloke called Phil Lewis is next. Urg not my thing at all! Dull songs with no energy or OOMPH!

Least [but of course not least] are Red Vision Shores. Cool mournful songs, but it’s a pity only provide three of them.

The Indie Zone

Various Artists (Compilation) - 15 Minutes - This CD is a compilation piece of 5 bands from the southern area of England. This CD was submitted by Red Ash and The Love Commandos, who wrote and performed the first 4 songs on this CD. This is a powerful and unusual band that has an interesting blend of keys and samples mixed in with a multitude of other musicians. You may contact Mark Rigler via email at Markbr@lds.co.uk. The next 4 tracks of this CD were written by Joone, who describe their sound as Indie Pop. They have a nice upbeat groove, and the frequent vocal duets are great. USN is the third participant on 15 Minutes, and they contributed 4 tracks. They have a slightly more aggressive sound, as their lyrics criticize the bleak reality of the monotous working class society. Phil Lewis follows directly after with 5 songs. These songs span a variety of sounds and textures, each new song considerably different, yet as good as the previous. Rounding out the collection of bands is Red Vision Shores. They offer 3 songs, each unique in it's own right. The first two are traditional dark pop rock tunes, and the third is a rap song to a funky, jazzy sounding groove with nice spacey guitar leads. This CD can be purchaced by contacting Mark Rigler of Red Ash and the Love Commandos, or by writing to 25 Records, PO Box 3006, Poole, BH12 2HU, UK. Phone or Fax 01202 749244. Rating: ***

Meanwhile back at the sweet shop

This is a cunning, if slight variation on the usual compilation set up. All five of the bands get around four tracks worth to set out their stalls. Most of this stuff lounges fairly comfortably on the eccentric side of the indie guitar couch. Except the genuinely scary Red Ash & The Love Commandos. Some good noise bursts in their four tracks worth, but the painstaking description of a sweet shop assistant's sexual, er dilemma when faced with the nascent charms of schoolgirl lolitas on "Sweet Shop" is more than a bit iffy. Besides which, the laboured psychologist as songwriter holds no charms for me. Joone are a different kettle of bananas altogether, breezy power-popsters who decorate their belligerent bursts with classy little touches, it's the place where Sleater-Kinney meet Veruca Salt and I like it. More manfully workmanlike are USN, dirty hands, dirty great riffs, churning bass and determinedly off-key girl vocals, just like a good night in the Water Rats, "This is what we came for" she yells, yes it is, more please! Phil Lewis goes for the yankee take on indie, outrageous accent, excellent, fuzzed up guitars, slackers on speed kind of stuff, all very jolly, but he does sound a bit a cross on "Million Dollars", his anti-consumerist, sub-kula shaker rant. More harmful fun with Red Vision Shores as they show exactly how many Wreckless Eric records they've got as they try to sound like them all.

Bands get their 15 minutes of CD fame

ANDY WARHOL'S vision of everyone being famous for 15 minutes provides the concept for the latest budget CD from Parkstone’s "25 Records" -the label serving to show-case locally based rock tal-ent.

Poole's space-rockers Red Vision Shores and off-kil-ter social dramatists Red Ash and The Love Commandos each provide 15 minutes of music on the new album, which is called 15 and is available from 25 Records priced £6 from P0 Box 3006, Poole, BH12 2HU.

Red vision Shores, featur-ing Dan Bamming, Stuart Blackmore, Nick Smith and Front Eskriett cram three numbers - Doorless Room, Genes and Diseased into their allotted quarter of an hour while the half-man, half electronic beast Red Ash serves up four offerings - If only Could. Sweet Shop, I Want You Inside Me and Rumours.

The label's last release, which was entitled Ouch!, had sales boosted by a long-running ad in Q Magazine offering a no~quibble, money-back guar-antee to anyone not liking what they head.

"Not surprisingly, "boasts label boss Mark Rigler, also of Red Ash, "no one asked for a refund, not one single person".

Splizz

Instead of releasing 5 singles by the five bands featured on this album 25 Records decided to compile an album of these bands, allowing each one of them 15 minutes of fame. Red Ash and the Love Commandos starts proceedings with 4 melodic pop songs of which ‘Sweet shop’ stands out. The song is about kids growing up and becoming obsessed with sex. The lyrics are reminiscent of a Colin Cross poem.

Next up, a band called Joone, who have built up a unique sound. The voices of their 2 vocalists, Andrew and Souix, work well together, especially on ‘White shoes’.

USN were formally known as Udder. They contribute 4 excellent underground songs. ‘The Score sounds like Republica mixed with Period Pains, where as ‘Cotton Wool Kid’ is a combination of the sounds of Bis, Kenickie and Lungleg. Their best song is ‘Nuts and bolts of industry’ which has the anger of L7 and Fluffy, but without the gritty noise.

The other two acts featured are Phil Lewis and Red Vision Shores. Phil’s guitar pop doesn’t set the heart alight and neither does Red Vision Shores Echo and the Bunnymen style dark pop. You can’t miss ‘Diseased’ though, the final track in which the funky bassline sounds like Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

This album manages to draw 5 new and exciting acts to your attention and for that it can be applauded.

BB

25 Records is one of those great little DIY Indie labels that are not afraid to take a chance on new bands. The bands featured on this 20 track affair differ greatly from each other and to be perfectly honest not everything is of tip top quality, but hey, lets not get picky here. You do get some cool stuff from the likes of Joone, USN and Red Vision Shores which are well worth checking out. Phil Lewis and Red Ash and the Love Commandos are also featured. All in all not a bad way to find out about new bands from the comfort of your home.

Pocket

15 Minutes five band CD

Best Track: ‘Fade away’ by Phil Lewis

Red Ash and the Love Commandos glean their name from a Zodiac Mindwarp song, but thankfully not their style, which is more a DIY affair. I don’t really like the vocals, but the music in the background is good, particularly on ‘Sweet shop’.

Joone have nice harmonies, and can play well. ‘White shoes’ has a brilliant bass line, as well as someone singing through a megaphone, so it is their best. The lyrics aren’t awe inspiring, but at least they’re not moronic. Soon to tour Germany.

USN [formally know as Udder] have good bass on all four songs, particularly ‘The Score’. I find that although the lyrics are good, especially in ‘The nuts and bolts of industry’, I don’t like the singer’s voice, even when distorted in ‘The Cotton Wool Kid’.

Phil Lewis contributes both the best and worst songs on the Cd. ;’Fade away’ has a good bass line, and lovely squelchy noises, making it very listenable. ‘A million dollars’ has better lyrics and an insistent drumbeat which makes way in the middle 8 for clanging noises. But then ‘Fantasy Reality’ and ‘Set your sights’ have really inane nasal lyrics.

Red Vision Shores don’t inspire me, despite having the best sleeve notes and dedicating these tracks to Scott Eskriett. I have to agree with the press release that ;’Diseased’ owes a lot to both ‘American alternative rock’ and The Specials.

The ½ Creeper

A compilation Cd featuring five bands. I like this one. It really stands out in terms of compilation CD’s. The reason? Why, it’s the bands [of course].

Starting things off, Red Ash and the Love Commandos. The most original band on this disc. Vocalist Captain Ash actually talks more than he sings, but, spoken word this isn’t. A very intelligent band that walks a fine line between indie, rock and pop. You have to hear them to truly appreciate them.

Joone provides the next four songs. Vocalist Sioux Baker is a dream. She’s an amazing woman, pure magic. She's shares vocal duties with drummer Andrew Wriaght and they work off each other rather well. The liner notes describe Joone as ‘indie pop at it’s best!’. I can’t argue with that. Great band!

USN is next. Vocalist Lettie Winter sounds almost punkish in her delivery, yet, the band sound more rock than punk, They’ve got a smooth straight ahead sound that is sure to carry them down the road to a successful career.

Phil Lewis is a versatile singer/songwriter who adds his own touch of class to an already classy disc. His presence gives the disc a bit of variety.

At the tail end of the disc is Red Vision Shores who, sadly, provide only three songs. Their brand of alternative pop rock leaves your head spinning and leaves you a hunger for more.

A very impressive line up, a very impressive CD. A must have addition to any collection. Add this one to yours as soon as you possible can. Now’s good!

The IndiePendent

Five bands are included on this CD, Red Ash and the Love Commandos, Joone, USN, Phil Lewis and the Red Vision Shores. Red Ash I perticularly dislike. Their song Sweet Shop is about loving children but not in a good way. If its aim is to shock then it did that. The rest of their songs follow the same path of dull music and `shocking` lyrics. Joone are much better thank goodness -they can sing and play guitar which helps when creating a band. Unfortunately though USN can play guitar but can`t sing. Phil Lewis is soulful and full of obviuos talent. Maybe he sounds better because he`s surrounded by such dross on this CD. Whatever the reason, he certainly stands out.
