choker

Does anyone in the band have any strange or unusual habits or superstitions? We are all convinced that if we don't get pissed every day that a great big hairy Demon will capture us while we practise and shit all over us.

Interview by Angi Kuzma.

What's the name of the band, and how did you come up with the name?

Choker - Out of a selection of names. We democratically chose this.

What are the individual member's names and what do they play?

Fran Beauchamp - Vocals

Humpty - Guitar + Vocals

Richi Sime - Bass

Ian Beauchamp - Drums + Vocals

How did you meet? Fran, Ian + Rich played in local punk bands in the early 80's. We met Humpty through a mutual friend - he is and was a house DJ

How long have you been together? 2 and a half years approx.

Where is the band based? Farnborough - Hampshire, UK

Who or what inspired you to become a musician? Personally the Sex Pistols and the British / American 70's punk groups.

What bands are you listening to at the moment? Gomez - The Grandaddys - The Dandy Wharhols - Mansun

What are some of your favourite songs?

Boys Better - 78s Don't Wobble. Party Hard

D/ Wharhols Gomez Pulp

Do you prefer to play in the studio or live gigs?

Both - All part and parcel of producing live music. They can both be fairly stressful.

Describe your sound.

Guitar-influenced by 70's punk and rock - melodical and raw

Where can people come and see you play? Guildford + London areas mainly.

What do you like about being a part of 25 Records? We'e been played on the radio a few times. However in the future this may not be the case.

Do you know any of the other bands on the label, and which one's are your favourite to listen to? Spotless

What are most of your songs about? (Love, partying, political, beer, etc.) All of the above. Webswerver is about a devil who has been alive on this planet since Adam + Eve

Give us an interesting story that happened either at a gig, or while writing or recording a song. Having streakers running around whilst we were playing was really funny - oh and shagging groupies - nothings more interesting than that.

Do you play any weird or unusual instruments?

The Guitarist can play a Diji Doo.

Have you been in other bands?

Yes - all of us.

Do you have any interesting stories involving the police or breaking the law? (That we can post on the site)

I was searched for drugs coming back from Ostend in Belgium, and informed the customs and excise gentleman that he would have had more luck if he had searched me on the way out.

Does anyone in the band have any strange or unusual habits or superstitions? We are all convinced that if we don't get pissed every day that a great big hairy Demon will capture us while we practise and shit all over us.

This is Hardcore!!!!!!

Here are a few questions we got out of Melody Maker from a Jarvis Cocker interview.

When did you lose your virginity? 16, but I had oral sex at an earlier age.

Would you be willing to give up sex for five years if you could have graphic erotic dreams any time you wished? No - I have a real good memory.

How would you react if you found out your lover had a lover of the same sex before you knew each other? Suggest a spit roasting one night [this is UK slang for 3 in a bed!!]

Feel free to contact any of the bands at 25 Records anytime for interviews/Band features/ gig info etc. at: 25 Records 60 Tollard Close, Poole, Dorset, BH12 2AU, England.

Meanwhile you can hear a song by Choker called 'Saviour' on the 25 Records compilation CD 'Olive's army', priced at only £5 including post.
