Who are Otherworld? Well, Otherworld is basically me and anyone who works with me at the time, by the way I’m Clare Durrant

Questionnaire

Well as I only have heard one track it’s difficult to get a perfect idea about the band, but are you a dance band or not. If not, how would you classify yourself? I wouldn’t say we were exactly a dance band. We actually started as a gothic punk band! Then I changed my writing style to include more technology. I could do more by myself that way and experimented in the tape album ‘messages’. Now I don’t really know what classification to put myself in.

Some people seem to think dance music will once blow away the traditional guitar sound, (a stupid thought I think, but anyway). What do you think of that? I actually use samples of specially played guitar in my music, like using the sequcencer as tape, you can splice so that shows what I think of that statement. I like guitars, I wish I could play one!"

Over here there is still a separation between ‘dance types’ and ‘rock types’, is it the same in the UK? Yes and no. There’s a mad ‘fringe’ that unites the two - bands like Timeshard, Prodigy and of course Otherworld, kind of bridge the gap in a crazy ‘head’ zone. It’s an area I’ve been pioneering for a while in my own little way.

Ermmm . . . Otherworld . . . Underworld or is this just coincidence? Actually no! The first band - the gothic punk one - was called Underworld - until we found that there was another band called Underworld. People went to the gigs of the Underworld you mean, thinking it was us! Well one person at least did! So we changed our name to Otherworld which was around the time the band split up. I was pleased in the three Celtic worlds, the Underworld, the world and the Otherworld. I liked the Otherworld, the world of inspiration, the gods and the future. But I didn’t know Underworld would become so big! 

Is the band just a hobby or are you 24 hours ‘Otherworld’? Well, since 'Otherworld’ is actually me, I suppose I’m Otherworld 24 hours a day. However, I recorded ‘Theme from Otherworld’ which is the first track of the ‘Gamporah’ story when I was five months pregnant and on 22nd of June 1996 I had by baby, called Connor. He’s now 16 months old and I’m planning a tour foe next summer by way of a family holiday for me and Connor, any ideas? The Story takes 20 minutes, the music will be available on tape and CD.

What would ultimate success mean for you? Everything in my life to be happy?

What’s the most nicest thing someone’s ever said? ‘You are Gaia’ (after one of the story telling gigs)

Are Otherworld completely underground or are there any changes you are on your way to make it? As I haven’t really done anything since Connor was born. I’m completely underground still, however the studio is now set up again and I’m planning a tour next year so who knows. Maybe I’ll come to Belgium.

Suppose you got a call from the manager of Kylie Minogue who is asking you if you mind if she could do some backing vocals,would you agree? Ha ha, jokey question right? She seems like a nice enough lass, I could always give her a try.

What’s your fave meal? Egg and chips

Who’s the most sexy person on plant earth? Connor’s dad.

Hmmm. . . most stupid record you ever bought is . . . Oh my god. I think it was ;don’t give up on us baby’ by David Soul. I must have been about ten years old and I fancied him in ‘Starsky and Hutch’.

What’s your fave record of all time and why did you choose it? ‘Erpland,’ by Ozric Tentacles, it changed my life.

What did 21st August mean for you? I think I went shopping.

Are you glad summer nearly gone? That's a strange question, I like the passing seasons but I’m glad to welcome the ones than say goodbye to the old. Actually I love Autumn best but I’ve already started thinking about next summer. Happy new year!

What are your plans for the future? Sort out a tour for next year, finish the ‘Gamporah’ story, start another one. Move house, to the country, I don’t know which country yet! Actually the Gamporah story has a long way to go yet.
