Dead After Dark
Whats the name of the band, and how did
you come up with the name? Dead After Dark - it was a description
of Coventry (where we are based) given in a radio interview by someone
setting up a nightclub there.....actually Coventry is not too bad
now
Who are the individual members of the band and
what do they play?
Steff - Vocals and Guitar

Holi auditioned.....
How long have you been together? This line-up:
2 and half years
Where is the band based? Leamington Spa
, Midlands UK
Who or what inspired you to become a musician?
Steff - Suzi Quatro - because she looked cool playing
an instrument and
the boys did what she said!
String - A long time ago I heard one of the Stranglers
early albums and
I loved the sound of the bass - especially on the
Rattus Norvegicus
album.
Holi - Ive always wanted to be a drummer
and some of my style of playing comes from listening to early James
- they had some well cool drum patterns.
What bands are you listening to at the moment?
Steff - Marc Almond, Tom Waits, Fat Boy Slim, Levellers,
kd Lang,
String - Levellers, Stereophonics, Suede, Dark
Star, Fat Boy Slim, Garbage
Holi - I dont know much about music but someone
recently lent me some. Dead Can Dance and early Peter Gabriel and
some of thats pretty cool
What are some of your favourite songs?
kd Lang - "Im too busy being blue";
Tom Waits "A soldiers things"
Levellers "Dirty Davy" and "Another mans cause"

88 (Steff) Ive just booked them to play at the Leamington
Peace Festival in June 99
What are most of your songs about? Drinking!
Mixed with politics....nearly always a bad combination!
Give us an interesting story
1. We were on our second tour to Finland. We got off the plane
from England and went straight to the gig in Helsinki. Quote: "Steff
can you pass me the keys for the guitar cases?" "Ah......the
keys.....ah."
2. How do you freak out the other band at a gig? Two ways: 1 When
they say "can I use your drum kit?" you say "Ask
her - the drummer - her names Holi......Holi Bush"and
2 When they way "Can I use your drumkit?" She says "Yes
but only if you ask it nicely" And then sit back while their
drummer has a conversation with Holis drums.
3. Fan at a gig - "You drummers alright - but you can can
tell hell be a lot better when hes warmed up" (and
so will your eyesight mate - Holi is very clearly NOT a bloke.
4. Holi was trying out a new stage outfit involving very tight
trousers and a certain see through quality in parts. She had to
wear particular underwear to avoid arrest. While watching the last
band of the night these words were overheard Steff: "?Theyre
good musicians and really tight." Holi: "Mmm.....but not
as tight as my pants!"
Do you play any weird instruments? No! But
we once had a drummer before Holi that claimed that his drum kit
was a 26 piece one - thats when youve counted all the stands
as playing surfaces.....
Have you been in other bands?: Yes - The
Trial, Fifth Floor, The Outfit, Jazz Republic, Visitation, Firedaze,
Eclipse
Do you have any interesting stories involving
the police etc Lots of weird things happen when your driving
in your van back from gigs late at night or in the very early hours
of the morning.
One of our stories involves the hitch-hiking accident
on the Fosse Way at about 2 in the morning where we thought wed
run over and killed a man. When we found we hadnt we took
him to the hospital - once he was in our cosy van it turned out
that he was a pub-window-smashing-drunken brawler newly released
from his police cell.....the full story actually goes on from there
and would fill 3 or 4 pages...needless to say when the band eventually
met up with the police it emerged that the guy wouldn't be pressing
charges coz he was too drunk to realise wed hit him - he thought
wed done him a favour(taking him to the hospital....and Steff
passed the breathalizer test too....
There was another time when the Police pulled us
and said "You do understand weve got to stop you because
youre in a van and its one oclock in the morning
(We didnt know that was against the law...)
And another time we got pulled - Steff was driving
again - the copper checks her details including asking "Whens
your birthday?" - before Steff could answer Holi came back
with the quickwitted (if alcohol fuelled) reply - "Why? are
you going to send her a card?"
The Police - as we know - do not have a sense of humour......
Dead After Dark is a three-piece indie roots rock band, based in
the UK. The band was founded by the song-writing partnership of
Steff (vocals and guitar), and String (backing vocals and bass).
After several line-up changes over the years, the band now also
features Holi Bush (drums).
The last few years have seen Dead After Dark playing live both in
the UK and abroad, recording sessions for BBC regional radio, appearing
on local TV stations, recording their debut album and winning a
place in the final for the L!ve TV National Battle of the Bands
competition. 1997 saw major line-up changes now reflected in the
new CD "See". This recording gives you a taste of Dead
After Dark - a band that you'll no doubt be hearing a lot more of.
