Interview with Jan Linton, updated 2004

Who or what inspired you to become a musician? It just happened naturally from an early age; I would hum and compose my own tunes as a child growing up in the countryside. I was a reluctant student of the violin from about age 6.

What bands are you listening to at the moment?
A lot of avant garde Japanese stuff I keep getting given. King Crismson~s "Red".

What are some of your favourite songs? I still love David Sylvian~s "Wave"
and "Damage". I covered his song "Nightporter" recently as that was a
favourite of mine for many years.

Do you prefer to play in the studio or live gigs? "Dr Jan(guru) was formed
to perform studio recorded material at large gigs in an exciting way,so
both" was what I said in 2001, but I have almost never been satisfied with
live shows I have done, so I am taking a break until after the new album is
finished in June 2004. Then I will do it right.

How did you meet? *In Japan. Strange as it seems I met Minol in the local
convenience store.

How long have you been together? *seems like forever, but the members keep changing. Mirai went back to the UK in early 2003, and I have not played with Mr Uchida recently; the only bass guitar on the last album "Communion" was by John Taylor from Duran Duran.

Where is the band based? *Japan/UK/Netherlands.The Dutch label only handles certain releases though.

Do you have a web site? As of now, this one!

Describe your sound. * An emotional yet sensual world in a darkened room that you can lose yourself in and wallow indefinitely.

Where can people come and see you play? Wait and see.

What do you like about being a part of 25 Records? 25 Records have stuck with me through thick and thin. One day it will all be
worth it...

What are most of your songs about?
(love, partying, political, beer, etc.)
Making love sensually and spiritually, your lifeforce slowly being drained
away.......

Give us an interesting story that happened either at a gig, or while writing or recording a song. The girl who jumped up on stage and wanted to be "kissed". Live blood drinking on stage at Japan`s biggest club. Alien
apparitions at our gigs. The outdoor gig in a typhoon. Holland~s E live and
the gig in the Philippines were surreal experiences. Get off a plane and
play the same day, kind of thing.

Do you play any weird or unusual instruments? As of 2004,its almost all
unusual instruments; that is half the point. Doing electronic rock with an
Irish folk influenced harmonica is a juxpostion to be reckoned with. I and
Minol still play and sample from my collection of Asian instruments, and
fiddle with the Turkish Saz.

Do you have any interesting stories involving the police or breaking the
law? ( That we can post on the site)
*I was banned from Australia for being a "danger to the health and order of the community". I hope they have forgotten about it by now as it was basically a misunderstanding, and I have tired of campaigning publicly at events that they sponsored which I ironically appeared in.

However, should I be refused a visa again, I will continue to campaign for
the free movement of peoples.

Does anyone in the band have any strange or unusual habits or superstitions? I have moved away from the alien cult which influenced alot of the topicsand image which characterised the band that made "alienshamanism" I am going for a more adult, spiritual approach now.

Please list 10 bands that sound something like you or fans of that band
would like you.

As of 2004, the newly reunified Duran Duran. I also saw "Sketch Show" in
Tokyo who are the members of YMO.. Also saw David Sylvian.

I also like anarchic, electronic/punk and drum n bass stuff- the Prodigy,
Sex Pistols, my friends in the Intelligentsia movement, Meshell Ndegeocello,
Bill Nelson, Moby, Joy Division/New Order (I loved the movie 24 Hour party
people), All Saints (!), the soundtrack of Clockwork Orange. I will keep
adding to this list.
