Onion Fresh

its not god its godboy

Ladies and gentlemen:

All good things must come to an end. I am sorry to announce that godboy no longer exists. Several members have developed new interests and musical styles that can only be furthered through different means. We have had the ride of our lives over the past four years, and want to thank all of our fans and friends for their encouragement and help.

In fact, it is because the words "fans" and "friends" have become synonomous that we have had such a wonderful time. We hope to continue to keep in contact with all of you who have touched our lives so deeply. If anyone is interested, copies of our album "soft jaws, sweet teeth" are still available at cdbaby.com/godboy99. I

t is a fitting last work that we are all still proud of. We will all miss the experience of being in godboy, and hope that you carry away fond memories of the band.

Signing off,

Shawn Setaro, godboy

How They Got Here/What They Sound Like...

Settling in Boston in the Fall of 1996 as an audacious acoustic duo, godboy, consisting then of old friends Daniel Madri and Matt Savage, drew immediate attention from local coffeehouse afficionados. Songs about testicles, dead siamese twins and hats sporting pom-pom's of human flesh, often failing to exceed two minutes in length, swiftly became a trademark attraction for the band. The musical energy they used to deliver these lyrical absurdities would secure a creative style critical to the band's future as an original act. For though they would go on to dabble in everything from punk anthems to country power ballads, each individual song managed to retain a catchiness and off-beat sensibility that would help characterize godboy's work as a whole as a return to the simplest tenants of rock n' roll via introspective musings and toilet humor.

A classified ad soon yielded Berklee student Shawn Setaro, whose uncompromising ear for the strange and beautiful would force the band to consider life without a bassist. Relying on a classical guitar to provide at least a modicum of low end, Dan allowed Shawn to concentrate on textural counterparts to the lead vocal, thereby making Shawn's role integral to the songwriting itself.

The absence of a bassist, though innovative as a deviation from traditional rock instrumentation, did create the pressure of locating a drummer capable of occupying all the space beneath the guitars, and one creative enough to do so interestingly. Two years and two drummers later, Matt Dodge, calling in response to another classified, landed the job.

Conceived in 1990, godboy relies on absurdity and simplicity to generate a  unique brand of material that appeals to the drunk intellectual in all of us. The songs integrate punk, country, and folk influences and resound with  a catchy, off-beat sense of humor. Says Shawn Setaro of his band's  self-proclaimed wit: "We needed to proclaim something...anything."

Godboy currently plays around Boston and has appeared at the Middle East,  T.T. the Bear's , Club Passim, Bishop's, O'Brien's, The Kirkland Cafe,  Bill's Bar and Mama Kin's. You may have also witnessed the band as one of  the 400,000 potential viewers of Mike Adam's Sports World on New England  Cable News, where they dazzled television producers and hockey aficionados  alike with their rockin' beats and phat harmonies.

Godboy received rave reviews for their first demo "Wild and Headless in   America" (recorded to 4-track) in the local publication "Danger Prone
Daphne," which exclaimed, "Geek rock rules!... I laughed my ass right off."   Further reviews would soon reinforce this sentiment. Following the band's   release of "Smell the Fury" (recorded to 4-track) in early 1997, Douglas   Sloan of Metronome boasts, "...you'll either love them or hate them. I   happen to like them," concluding that "this quartet has a fetching fantasy  aura about them that makes them worth checking out." The Noise offers a   simpler, less crazy description: "Beantown's answer to Beck, maybe." The   article goes on to say that "sharp lyrics and an eagerness to vary the mix   make this a keeper from the get-go."

The band has gone on to record a studio EP entitled "The Best Looking Band   in the World," featuring the single "Check out my Lava Lamp." As the low  fidelity edge of 4-track recording is absent from the album, the band has   been able to maintain its interest in experimenting with different  aesthetics and techniques.

Hence the godboy mission statement: "To conquer all forms of media and   become all-powerful and also to be sex symbols."
