MONKEY BOY Monkey in a rocket (CD-single)
As the sleeve showed a monkey that has been tortured by scientists
(...scum would be a better name!!!) I was expecting to hear a very
brutal sound but it isn't...Somewhere Monkey Boy are flirting with
both hardcore and emocore and the result is something like a rocket
(ha!) going straight to your brain... There's a chainsaw bass, there's
a typical emoguitar and there's Paul's voice you don't expect it
would be used in this type of music, but it works! Maybe it is wrong
to come up with Idlewild every time I review a record in this genre
but honestly I couldn't think of anything else...it starts with
a kind of mellow voice but as soon as the chorus starts, all you
hear is a voice full of frustrations...Hey, and even if it's not
funny to be frustrated, I do hope these guys will never reach the
"state of being normal" (...whatever that might be!!!)
as I'm so much in love with the music they're making...Make 'em
happy family men (uuummm...maybe they are!) and everything will
be spoiled. Don't see it as a sarcastic thing as I'm emotionally
moved by any kind of abuse towards animals but hearing this CD-single
must equal the emotions the poor monkey was going through...

Formed in '95 by Brothers Paul (Drums & Vocals), and
Mark (Chainsaw Bass), with Disco Stu (Bass) completing the trio
early '96, they quickly gelled into a quirky slightly disturbed
outfit they are today. With not a single guitar in sight Monkey
Boy are all about digressing from the norm and taking grooveable
noise to new levels. It's all about taking punk and hard-core ethics
and adding a warped sense of humour to turn music as we know it
into something totally different.
It all started after being spotted supporting TRIBUTE TO NOTHING
by LOCKJAW RECORDS (Tribute's own label and UK home of UNSANE and
ZEN GUERRILLA). The label we're so impressed with the band that
they released mONkEy bOys "Death of a Stuntman"
on the "Helping You Back To Work" CD compilation July
'97.
This was followed a month later by the bands debut "Untitled"
Single on POLAR BEAR RECORDS. Side A was recorded and mixed by Harvey
Birrell, the guy behind THERAPY?'s "Pleasure Death" and
"Nurse Albums". Side B was mixed by Jim Turner (Tribute
to Nothing) and recorded by Andy Couples, Andy recorded the excellent
JACOB'S MOUSE album "I'm Scared".
Within a few weeks of the single's release it sold out in many of
the U.Ks indie stores. Radio One D.J John Peel liked it so
much he played both sides of it on his show. Many of the Independent
Labels wanted to release records for Monkey Boy, so the band gave
a select few a couple of tracks for release on compilation CD's
before negotiating a deal with old friends, LOCKJAW RECORDS in early
'98.
June 98 saw the release of the bands second single, produced
once again by TRIBUTE TO NOTHING'S Jim titled "MONKEY IN A
ROCKET".

MONKEY BOY will be playing a show upstairs at The Garage, London

July '98
I know it is a bit of a way off at the moment but I thought I'd
let you know anyway, we will be playing with label mates TRIBUTE
TO NOTHING for the first time since we played with them 2 years
ago! The show will be held at The White Horse in High Wycombe as
part of Tribute's warm shows for their Tour on 26th Sept.
All of MONKEY BOY wanna thank everyone who came to any of the shows
on our tour recently and all who have been buying our new single,
we are very grateful and pleased at the success of this release.
We will be out on the road again in November (maybe scotland as
well this time!) with plans for another single towards the end of
the year followed by an album in the new year.
"PLANET PAUL POPE" from the new single will feature on
a CD from the band Cynical Smile. Here is what was said on their
website:
"The new tentative release date for the new single by Cynical
Smile - The Circle - has been set for August 31 and, as previously
mentioned it will feature tracks by Cynical Smile and by various
other bands - including the excellent Monkey Boy, Liberty 37, Cay
and ORG labelmates Speedurchin, with a few unknowns (Well, unknown
to me - no one tells me anything!)".

We are in talks with Bob Weston (Shellac bass player) about him
recording our album later on this year, he is 100% up for it, we
just need to sort out a date to fly him over from the states.
We have signed a deal with LOCKJAW RECORDS (New home of TRIBUTE
TO NOTHING and New York's UNSANE) for the release of our next single.
The release under the working title of "MONKEY IN A ROCKET"
should be out early June. It looks as if Jim Turner (Tribute to
Nothing) will be recording it with help from Henry (has recorded
us quite a bit in the past). A New T-Shirt has already been designed
for the release tour Click Here to view it. Other releases in the
near future include a track on the Lockjaw CD comp "HELPING
YOU BACK TO WORK" Vol 2 which should be out MID MAY. Other
bands on it include UNSANE, TRIBUTE TO NOTHING, ZEN GUERRILLA, LEVER,
LEECH WOMEN + many more.
In other news, Mark is working on some excellent head gear (helmets)
for the next tour. He should be wearing the first prototype at a
gig very soon, pictures when we have them.

Due to a few little hic ups, our single release has been delayed
until the start of Aug, if all goes to plan with the pressing it
might even be a bit earlier. Paul has been working hard on a re-mix
for Tribute To Nothing, Tribute are very keen to release this on
their own label LOCKJAW sometime in the future, the re-mix is based
around the track "Cecil", other ideas include a re-mix
from the band Leech Woman. In other Monkey Boy news, the band are
working on a video which will include highlights from their forthcoming
live dates as well as the band mucking around trying to breakdance
