MOTH CONSPIRACY Madeleine (CD-single) (3,5 points)
Those who are familiar with the indie compilations
by 25 Records surely will know how Moth Conspiracy sounds like,
and here they are with the release of a CD-single. Opener "Madeleine"
has the right ingredients that made Cherry Red-records such a delight...simply
great acoustic pop. The other two tracks reminded me a bit of The
Beautiful South (not the Paul Heaton-voice!!!...just same kind of
music) and I'd never thought this was bad...Classic indiepop that
also lends some bits from "serious" artists (disgusting
term, not?) as Elvis Costello. All by all it's not a record that
will be hailed as "the next big thing" but sometimes it's
just better to maintain the old standards... (CONTACT: 25 RECORDS,
PO BOX 3006, POOLE, BH12 2HU, U.K.)
Review was taken from The Original Sin, issue 19,
Winter 98 was written by Dider Becu. The Original Sin is one of
favourite fanzines, write to Didier and ask for a copy, send 3 IRCs

CAMBRIDGE THREE PIECE MOTH CONSPIRACY FIRST APPEARED IN LONDON
when a panel of record company representatives at the Camden Music
Mix `96 seminar favourably reviewed their demo tape "EXTRA".
Dave Wibberly of V2 Records gave the Moths his top vote; other good
reactions came from Roadrunnars's Ruth Robinson and Gary Crowley
from Greater London Radio.
The pop group, who consistently pack dance floors in Cambridge,
Oxford and the Channel Islands, have built up a strong London following
over the last seven months. The gigs have taken place at the Red
Eye (Islington), HQ Club (Camden), Rock Garden (Covent Garden),
Dome Club (Tufnell Park), Bull & Gate (Kentish Town). They have
not neglected the Cambridge supporters during this time; gigs at
the Boat Race and King's College earned them May Ball bookings as
usual. Moth Conspiracy has recently headlined at a Global Entertainment
Group party night where they're new material was warmly received.
At the Recent Muswell Hill Street Festival Moth Conspiracy T-shirts
were sold (and signed on request), and the mailing list welcomed
many new names after the band's performance. The set was extended
by calls for encores from an enthusiastic (though unfamiliar) crowd.
The audience joined in with the pumping "No Me Dejes"
using percussion instruments thrown out to them by the suddenly
Hispanic Moths.
Since the band's London debut at the Camden Laurel Tree venue in
January, fresh demand for Moth Conspiracy recordings has exceeded
supply, but sponsorship has been found for the band to record new
songs for a promo CD single. The two tracks likely to be included
are the followers` favourite: Madeleine and the weird and wonderful
Piccadilly Weepers which, in the view of Cambridge DJ and Rock journalist
Jeanette Blair,"...is an obvious choice for a first single
with a spiky, discordant guitar riff worthy of Sonic Youth or the
Pixies..."
The band has described themselves variously as "a jazz-grunge
outfit", "a boys guitar group" and "an effeminate
version of the who". Echoes of Sly and his Family Stone, Supergrass,
VU, Brazilian Funk, Stereolab, Public Enemy, Joy Division, Radiohead
and the immortal Charles Aznavour can be heard in the noise being
made here.
