A few words about each band.
The Holsteins:
How could you not love them? They are like extra thick chocolate
milkshakes that don't make you fat.
Popshop: Sweden's
finest indie pop stars.
UK Heights and Clare
Begley: Clare cleans up with this collaboration.
Osmosis: It's
indisputable mixture of haunting ballads and more up tempo, indie
sounding tracks that have all the ingredients of success.
Cord: Have
nothing to say, but they moan a lot.
Curious Oyster:
Taken from the CD Horse Feathers, released on 25 Records, Curious
Oyster are back on form.
Marine Time Keepers:
This is our soapbox about life and how people should treat each
other.
Red Ash and the Love
Commandos: In a world of pain and suffering, we praise god
and count our blessings, then out of the blue; some bitch turns
up and says Say what?
Monitor Liz:
From outer space Monitor Liz roll, sing deep, crank up guitars,
do huge melodies and that's before they land on planet earth. [Currently
living in Belfast]
Famous Sons:
Is best listened to whilst sitting on the roof of an open-top car
navigating its way through the twists and spikes of Parkstone's
wildest terrain while the sun beats down
Robert Bevan:
We are a blend of the erotic and the obscene, of happiness and dispersion.
Spindrift:
We feel that a good melody turns good music into a great song.
The Soul Sound 3:
They play a dangerous game, but I'm not sure of what.
The Hamptons:
Basically catchy pop/rock with
a wry twist and very British.
Otherworld:
Some of their material has benn described as the Pink Floyd of the
90's.
The Dead in Christ:
Take their influences from Doomsday Cult leaders and Serial Killers.
All good Irish boys at heart.
Garfields Birthday:
Formed in 1995 to write and record melodic guitar based pop songs.
Walking Wounded:
From the ash trays of the perimeter Walking Wounded play prolific
multi-faceted originals.
Parkstone Dub Foundation:
Hoooooooorid people have they are as dubby as Steps. Hey we like
Steps!

The Original Sin
I suppose I have to congratulate Mark from 25 Records twice... First
of all, he gets my prize for what must be the most disgusting record
sleeve I've ever seen!!! What will you explain to your little nephew
if he discovers a sleeve that shows a naked bum and... believe me,
it's the most extraordinary bum you'll ever going to see!!! But
most important, in that I have to congratulate him too as this is
by far the best compilation-CD 25 Records has ever released!!! Not
only there are some of my fave unsigned bands included on here,
but 21 tracks long the quality level goes from "quite OK"
to "outstanding". The flyers you see may mention the word
"indiecompilation" but that's only a part... this is more
a popcompilation that has lots of different types of music on it.
I guess you already know what 25 Records is all about. On a very
frequent base Mark releases compilation-CD's and they all have one
thing in common : "unknown, unsigned..." and for some
you can use the words "the future"... I'm not going to
comment each track but I'll give you my fave ones (...and that must
be 3/4 of the CD...). The CD kicks in with The Holsteins (superb
indie with great female vocals), Popshop (they're from Sweden and
before reading this I was thinking of The Cardigans, although Darling
Buds are a reference as well!!!), Osmosis (indiefolk with Beth Orton-like
vocals), Cord (very experimental guitarmusic), Curious Oyster (who
must be the most underrated band ever...extremely Cocteau Twins-like)
Marine Timekeepers (Blueboy and Field Mice-pop...so yeah, extremely
Sarahpop!), Red Ash And The Love Commandos (their fave song must
be Bros' "When will I be famous?" as each track they release
is an instant classic!), Monitor Liz (I suppose it's kind of cool
to be compared with Devo, not?), Robert Bevan-Jones (a singer-songwriter
who's aware that for such a genre his weapon must be a very good
song), The Soul Sound 3 (there's more from Wigan than just The Verve),
The Dead In Christ (it may be a gothic-like band's name but it's
more something like The Gang Of Four!) and finally there is the
mellow indiesounds from Garfield's Birthday... And with this alone,
I only mentioned the extremely good tunes on here!!! And hey ho...a
special offer too...if you write to 25 Records and you mention the
name of this zine in your letter, you'll get it for 5 pounds only...

The Exclusive
25 records are back again, this time with a five - band compilation
where each band plays for 15 miniuites An original concept but then
25 Records are not your usual label. Red Ash and The Love Commandos
open proceedings with 4 tracks of their slanted take on keyboard
based pop, then Joone throw in some pure indie pop (and for once
that tag describes their male female vocal sound perfectly). USN
give us 15 minutes of their Siouxsie and The Banshees sound a like
new wave. Then Pete Lewis plays guitar pop but is a bit too MOR
for me, and finally Red Vision Shores end with 3 tracks of alt rock.
For me, USN stand out the most but for a fiver you just can't go
wrong.

Starts off with a excellent track by Belfast's power pop fivesome
The Holsteins entitled "Medicine" and continues with more
female fronted bands producing excellent songs, in the vain of commercial
material. By Track Five and its getting more off the wall with Cord
and the Curious Oyster number "Imprint" is a true gem.
Their is a lot of new music just waiting to be discovered and this
comp goes a little way in trying to bring it to the surface, with
21 tracks waiting for your ears it isn't a bad investment. There
is a lot of versatility on this album with new-wave, rockpop, dub,
dark tecno, indie, and quite a few Lou Reed 'e' vocalists, no not
a stars in their eyes please!

OOER, MISSUS
A brand new sparkling compilation from Dorset featuring a whole
bunch of bands -most of which sound nothing like Machine Head, Marylin
Manson or Pram of Shit (oops, I meant Cradle of Filth). Mind you
considering the style of music featured, the cover is certainly
a little on the crude side. Anyhow, The Holsteins kick things off
in a St Ettiene sort of way, followed quickly by Sweden's Popshop,
who remind me of Brighton's soon-to-be-big Fruit Machine - fey,
guitar-driven female-fronted pop - but it's probably Cord who steal
the show here, with their American lo-fi, Beck-like dirge, followed
by The Hamptons Bolan-esque little ditty, "Don't Bypass My
Heart". This won't appeal to all you grind-core lovers out
there, but lads, it might give you some cred with your heavy metal-hating
girlfriend, so think about investing in a copy. Steve Lamaq and
John Peel fans buy now.
AUTOreverse
Exhibit B on why cover art is irrelevant to review
writing,: a sliced-open cadaver. And the writing on the cover! That
font is more hideous than death. Plus band names like OSMOSIS and
THE DEAD IN CHRIST Hmmmmm. Any bets? Well your probably wrong. The
first track, The Holsteins 'Medicine' is a fine guitar pop choon
with layers of female vocals.
Track two, Popshop's 'Of Venus sent' is more of
the same, sort of. Cherry pop with acoustic and electric guitars
and layers of female vocals. Would make a god damn fine single on
its own. Cord starts off with a distorted drum loop so fine I'm
off to sample it now for my own personal use . . . the whole song
is distorted with typical 90's Brit swagger. Real hands in corduroys
nodding to the floor digits.
Curious Oyster's 'Fur' comes on with an orchestra
of drum machine bobbles and them digital effected guitars and looping
bass. They have a working knolodgy of the gospel of The Coucoteau
Twins and maybe Siouxsie too [must I say again how little I know
about her?!]. Drum machine, effected guitar, pretty female vocals.
Sounds like an interesting recipe. I'd buy a single from 'em shit.
Monitor Liz goes totally Numan on @Ian McMartian.
Buzzing analogue synchs with live drumming. And vocal that of been
recorded in a crowded cardboard box. Guitars that kick in the chorus.
Highly awesome! Robert Bevan Jones does a mid 70's soft rock ballad
type thing, which is terrifying. you can hear the orange shag carpet
in the recording, somewhere between the organ swells. Yikes!
The Hamptons sound like a real band on 'Don't by
pass my heart' with a chorus not a million miles removed from that
'Freak of the week' song I keep hearing at work when they have the
alternative station on. Otherworld sound like a chorus of acoustic
guitars and pianos and drums and singers, it's kind of startling
actually. The instramention is fussy and over the top in a way that
would guarantee them instant fame in Canada, where such things are
covered.
The Dead in Christ's 'Lorena Bottit [where is your
smile]' is crudely recorded 2 note metal drone action. the echo
effect on the vocals make it sound like it was recorded at an amusement
park attraction where you can go in and make a karaoke tape for
ten bucks.
Walking Wounded are frightenly good musicians.
'The Gypsy Dance' is pure Moroccan violin, bass and hand procession.
With harmonica too! If they walked around London playing this stuff,
they would be constantly pelted with spare change. They could pay
their rent in spare change. 'Four colours for you' is a ballardy
deal with accordion and acoustic guitar and singing. Sounds like
a Mediterranean Pogues. But what the fuck do I know?
. . .So what's up with that fucking CD cover anyway????

ZABADAK
21 tracks in total with 19 different up and coming acts...and so
ready or not here we goes. First four tracks (all sung by females)
are fine even if not completely earth shattering...The Holsteins
(a Belfast quintet) provides youthful sounding Belly / Velocette
/ Blondie pop via 'Medicine , Sweden's Popshop with 'Of Venus Sent'
create similar sweet exuberant Belly / Velocette / Lush sounds -
fine guitar...shoe gazing...in fact good, then a collaboration between
U.K. Heights & Clare Begley 'Coming Clean' - more mature sounds
here - folk, Osmosis 'Now I Can Fly' back to the sounds of youth...a
sort of mix of folk & indie.
Of the rest - well much of it is pleasant and the standard is maintained...high
points are Curious Oyster and 'Imprint' another lush female vocalist...interesting
backing effects inspired by Cocteau Twins, Marine Time Keepers 'When
Will You Realise That I Care?' a sultry sexy female vocal with thoughtful
gentle backing, Red Ash & The Love Commandos 'Say What' an amusing
tale via a very English sounding male voice & female responses,
The Soul Sound 3 'Movie Star' a sort of cross between The Left Banke
& Led Zep, Otherworld from South Wales provide two tracks in
the uptempo poppy 'Sing Form' and a moving ballad 'Stay' (Stereophonics
or Southern Sons springs to mind) and surprises. Low points are
Cord 'Ordinary' which it is, and The Dead In Christ 'Lorena Bobbit
(Where Is Your Smile)' which sounds like Backwater on a wet day.
Generally the standard is very high even with the assortment of
unknown names...they all manage to create something interesting
- the whole fits together nicely - never underestimate these smaller
labels - the beautiful sounds contained herein are testament to
that.

25 Records continues to put out compilation CD's. The latest one
to be added to the collection is "Ooer Missus". Previous
releases were heavy in cotton candy pop music that was sweet to
taste. This release, while still being a good album, lacks the memorable
songs. Still, this album has some fine moments, The Holsteins, Popshop,
Osmosis and the ever present Red Ash & The Love Commandos...
they make it all worth while. I still favour "Obvious"
and "15 Minutes", they feature the style of music that
has made me love 25 Records. On a side note, 25 Records are interested

Such a strange cover is maybe not the best thing to make this album
play everywhere. I must admit I was surprised to see it. But the
most important is the content no? For sampler album, it's also a
big surprise. It's not heavy metal, hard rock or any kind of extreme
metal. Ooer, Missus shows various rock band. It's more pop song
brilliantly sung by a female singer for The Holsteins & Popshop
, some rock ballads liek Texas did & all stuffs like that. Sometimes
there's good guitars parts with a few distortion, sometimes it's
only clearer guitars. I don't think this kind of album can be listen
to by classic metal fans. Anyway, if you like good rock music, this
sampler is quite interesting & it's definitly not bands with
commercial attitude.

You know Mark at 25 Records constantly amazes me. He seems to be
able to bring out compilation albums at a phenomenal rate, and whats
more 99.9% of the bands that he features on them are not only worthy
of getting material released, but also new names to me as well.
So how does 'Ooer, Missus' shape up to the reputation that proceeds
it. Well the answer, is simple - pretty damn well. 21 tracks of
fine fettle, is one way of describing it all, with bands such as
The Holsteins, Popshop, Cord, Famous Sons and the remarkably monikered
The Dead In You, all standing out as the cream of a very good crop
of cool new bands. Not so sure on the cover though, we could have
done with out that really, still it's the music that matters, and
that above everything else, is what shines through the best. If
you write for more details, then please mention BB.Zine, as I am
reliably informed that our readers get a bit of a discount, which
can't be bad, can it?

Somewhat closer to home, if the boy/girl/slug/alluvial deposit
in your life is more interested in the development of the now deep-underground
guitar-based pop scene, you could do a lot worse than to invest
in a copy of Ooer Missus, the latest compilation CD from the Poole-based
label 25 Records (copies are available for a mere £5 including postage
- if you mention that you read this review in the Dorset Evening.
Housed in a genuinely revolting but admirably imaginative sleeve,
Ooer Missus is chiefly of interest to Echo readers because it features
a rather fine track (Ambulance) by Weymouth's very own Garfield's
Birthday (who are so popular in this office that someone has half-inched
our file picture of the band) sounding a lot like Bandwagonesque-
era Teenage Fanclub - and there can surely be no greater praise.
I was also mightily impressed by scruffy Blondie-alikes The Holsteins
from Belfast, Sweden's Popshop (shades of Fruit Machine and The
Cardigans) and The Dead In Christ, who sound like The Cramps in
a wind tunnel.

Music Dish
A collection of UK goodies, and I must, say, yes, they Are good.
Let's start with the sex kitten sounds of Popshop's "Of Venus
Sent". They're from Sweden, sound young, and their harmonies
are what the Bangles might do if they could come forward in time.
One of the greatest things about 90's bands is their ability to
keep coming up with funny or stupid band names. So, folks, on samplers,
I head for the silliest names first, then work my way back. That's
why even though it's track 18, I flipped over to Garfield's Birthday
and had a listen to their "Ambulance". They are very much
like early Who , complete with bopping vocals and loud guitar in
your earhole.
The Dead in Christ are next up - on My list - with their "Lorena
Bobbit (Where Is Your Smile)". Now, being one of the few people
in the world who watched None of the OJ trial, and who fwd's the
news whenEver it gets on my tv, I only know vaguely about Bobbit
. The vocals on this song don't tell me much either, I can't damn
hear them. This one's like a preacher on a box way above the band,
yelling into a reverb mic.
Otherworld have 2 songs on this cd. "Sing For Me" is a
wonder. Love the large vocals, the wide guitar, the sort of song
you could sing across the Grand Canyon to your love, and she'd know
what you're saying. Lovely. "Stay" is their ballad which
has slow beauty, and a nice lead vocal, but I have trouble making
it out the words sometimes.
Walking Wounded also have 2, the first is "The Gypsy Dance"
which is just FUN. You want to swing round and round like a Hindi
on this one, man. "Four Colours For You" is their #2 (well,
track 20) and it's great worldly stuff. A calypso? A tango? I can
never get those straight, but it's not made for ass sitting. There's
some great stuff on here, certainly worth checking out.

Modern Dance
Completely unannounced, this little gem of a compilation landed
on the welcome mat, and I can hear you ask, is it any good? Pretty
much of a big yes on that! To be truthful, I was expecting it to
be a collection of would-bes and try hards, all getting nowhere
fast, but hell, theres really great songs on here. The album
has 21 tracks in all, none of the bands [I must confess] Ive
heard before, but I will [hopefully] be checking out more of the
gear on 25 Records. The first track is Medicine, by The Holsteins,
and its a very impressive opener indeed. Straight into Of
Venus Sent, by Popshop another female lead singer, and another
tight, and slightly heavier sounding Sundays style
a hellishly impressive song. The UK Heights and Clare Begley with
Coming Clean is another! Hell, how can this stuff like this go unnoticed?
A complete change for Cord, with Ordinary, [which is far from Ordinary]
bloodly hell, brilliant. To be honest, I really cant go saying
that each track is like a breath of fresh air, and why havnt
I heard of 25 Records before/ But the mix of styles and quality
of the production is simply amazing. Monitor Liz is perhaps one
of the weaker tracks, but saying that, Ive heard a damm sight
worse on major labels! I tell you what, why dont you get a
check off to them, [telling em I sent you] and judge for yourself.
The majorty of the songs/bands on here deserve more.
