Sandy Shores

What's the name of the band, and how did you come up with the name?
Sandy Shores. Everyone, at least once in their life, except perhaps people from Blackpool, has seen a sandy shore. They're the end of something and the beginning of something else. Isaac Newton once said he felt like a child on a beach looking for shells. Every now and then he'd be lucky enough to find a particularly pretty one, while the ocean of knowledge lay undiscovered before him. That pretty well sums us up.

What are the individual members names and what do they play?
Angus Newton (English) sings and plays rhythm guitar.

Frédéric Le Gall (French) plays bass guitar and keyboard, and does backing vocals.

David Adrian (French) bangs the drums. Thierry Garacino (French) is lead guitarist.

Thierry Garacino (French) is lead guitarist and recorded the "START" 6 track CD.

Do you have a web site? Yep - http://sandyshores.homepage.com

How did you meet? Angus and Fred, both from Paris, literally stumbled across each other at the Reading 98 Festival - and went on from there. Various demos and formations followed. They went through 2 drummers and 3 guitarists before finding David and Thierry.

How long have you been together?
Sandy Shores has been going for 3 years. David and Thierry have been with the band for a year.

Where is the band based? We all live in Paris, France.

Who or what inspired you to become a musician? Mmm, tricky. Being honest with oneself ? The thrill of playing live ? I know Johnny Marr inspired me to ask for a classical guitar for my 21st birthday, but that was years before I started singing. Can't really answer for the others. David's heavily into Jazz. Thierry is a sound technician with Radio France (he produced our "START" CD), used to listen to the Stooges a lot. Fred's more Beatles, Stones, Floyd, though whether or not they inspired him...

What inspired you? Thierry is an independant producer who often works for Radio France (n lieu of "Thierry is a sound technician with Radio France") and grew up listening to Bowie, Velvet, Stooges and Eric Satie.

What bands are you listening to at the moment? Air, Alphajet, Supergrass, Sea Urchins, Boyracer, Blur. Everything and nothing.

What are some of your favourite songs? My all time favorite is Air's "Ce matin là". Fred's is Yellow Submarine.

Do you prefer to play in the studio or live gigs?
Does anyone prefer to play in a studio ?

Describe your sound. It's like being gently massaged with warm, scented oils and then tipped into the Baltic.

Where can people come and see you play? We've got a big concert coming up at the Divan du Monde in Paris on the 28th february 2001. We play mainly in and around Paris (pubs etc.). All gigs are posted on our website.

What do you like about being a part of 25 Records? The fact that we have absolutely no idea where it will lead us. You're also our first serous contact abroad.

What are most of your songs about? (love, partying, political, beer, etc.)
Oh they're about love mostly. Ex-, current-, future relationships. Though who's to say they won't be about beer one day ?

Give us an interesting story that happened either at a gig, or while writing or recording a song. Well, we were having a quiet pint after a gig at Corcoran's Irish Pub in Paris, when this bloke makes off with one of our amps. Already half down the street before we click. Luckily at that very moment a police car draws up and sirens blasting screeches off after him. Unfortunately, they never got him.

Do you play any weird or unusual instruments? One of our songs - Martinis and Bikinis - starts with a glockenspiel.

Have you been in other bands? Yeahhhh. Angus was in 3/12 and Swanlake. Fred was in Libido, Flashbox, Stockshot, Rosemarie, Gasoline and Prince Cissoko. Thierry was in Clubland, and David still plays with Yann et les Abeilles (la petite pute).

Do you have any interesting stories involving the police or breaking the law? ( That we can post on the site) See 3 questions above.

Does anyone in the band have any strange or unusual habits or superstitions? No, but we're working on it.

Please list 10 bands that sound something like you or fans of that band would like you. I.e. if you like S Club 7 or Steps then you would probally like The Vengaboys.

Smashing Pumpkins
Bran Van 3000
Flaming Lips
