A bit of history: We used to be in two separate and very poor bands,
when we were at Sixth Form College, but we don't like to talk about
it.
Members of the band present: Alex, Matt, Graham. (Tilley is downstairs
watching the footie)
The Interview:
l. How did you all meet?
Matt: Me, Tilley and Asbury went to primary school together. When
we were five, Asbury went to live in Brazil for two years, and we
saved him a chair in class. I worked with Marc in a DIY Shop on
Saturdays when I was sixteen and I thought he was an old man. I
bought a guitar with my first pay packet and asked him to be in
a band the next day.
Alex: I went to Secondary school with Graham, but we didn't really
talk to each other until we were in the same classes at college,
which is where we met Asbury.
Graham: We all met in a pub while trying to buy speed that turned
out to be Lemsip.
2.How long have you been together?
Alex: We've been in bands since we were sixteen, but The Wedge
has only been about for two years, but Graham wasn't in at first.
Graham: They got me in after they realised none of them could sing
Matt: Neither can you.
Graham: Outside now...
3.Has it been a long hard road to fame?
Alex: You're not famous until you look like Keith Richards.
4.Who is the main songwriter?
Matt: Me.
Alex: No me.
Graham: I did it all.
Matt: I write the words.
Graham: No I do.
5.Are there any band squabbles?
Matt: Of course not.
Alex: He lies. We argue about topics ranging from who played the
butler in Hart to Hart to Asbury's belief that you could physically
tear up a Rizla enough times and stood the pieces end on end It
would be l0,000 miles high.
Graham: We're fine until we're all in the same place, which is
why there is three of us doing this Interview
TIlley: (the match was abandoned) Lionel Standler
6.What is the scene like in your area?
Matt: Camden is the nearest scene to us, but you have to be in
with latest trends that are in Melody Maker.
Graham: It can be a good sport, seeing how many Liam Gallagher's
and Richard Ashcroft's are in one pub.
Alex: For example we were in the pub talking about bands and someone
said to me that I couldn't be in a band as my hair didn't cover
my ears.
Matt: Fair enough.
7.Who or what inspired you to become a musician?
Graham: I'm not sure exactly what inspires me. But I love being
in a band, it's all I want to do in life.
Mart: George Harrison in Help!.
8.Who are your favourite bands at the moment?
Tilley: Matt Bianco
Alex: At the moment there are not too many good guitar bands (since
the Stone Roses), but we all like the Chemical Brothers, Prodigy
and Primal Scream.
Matt: I live in 1972, 50 Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who etc.
9.What are the highs and lows of being in a band?
Matt: What have you got?
Graham: Playing gigs, going to work the next morning.
Alex: A man had a heart attack at our third gig but I didn't notice
until I saw the paramedic.
Graham: What? I thought they were just punters with crap jackets.
10. Do you prefer recording In the studio or playing live shows
Graham: Playing live is definitely my favourite of the two but
I like the taut that theres no pressure in the studio so you
can relax drink beer and arse about a bit.
Matt: I go a bit odd on stage, and jump about a bit. But I like
messing about in the studio with Tilley making strange noises on
keyboards and samplers. Listen to the end of our new Song, Benson,
you'll get what I mean.
Alex: I prefer to play live, but when your playing at your local
venue, the, heatings packed up and the roof is leaking you
think it is a lot easier to be in the studio.
ll. Do you have any advice for bands just starting out?
Matt: It's deeper than it looks.
Graham: If I knew all the answers Id a) use them and b) eat
them after.
12.Sum up your music in three words?
Matt: Rock and Roll.
Alex: It's frothy man.
Graham: It's good mama.
Tilley: Cockel Shell Bay.
